Stay updated with new offers & more

Weightlifting is a fundamental part of a fit and healthy lifestyle. It not only allows you to bulk up and build muscle mass, but lifting weights can also help you maintain weight loss, boost metabolism, increase bone density, and much more. A common form of weightlifting is exercises that involve the combination of a barbell and a weight plate which can be attached. There is no one type of weight plate but in fact several. It’s important that you find the type of weight plate that is best suited for your own fitness goals.

In this article, we will explain some of the different types of weight plates that are available to buy on the fitness market.

Standard and Olympic Plates

Before we delve into two particular types of weight plates, it’s important to first look at the most significant layer. Every weight plate will either be a Standard Plate or an Olympic Plate. Standard plates have a 1-inch hole in the centre and they are therefore only capable of being attached to standard barbells and weights. Olympic plates, however, have a 2-inch hole which is suitable for both standard and Olympic bars. Olympic bars have benefits such as more flexibility, greater thickness and increased durability thanks to its grip-style handles. When it comes to choosing a weight plate, it should go without saying that the Olympic plates are widely preferred, especially given that they are capable of holding standard bars as well as Olympic bars. Olympic plates are considered to be of a higher quality and the premium choice for competitive weightlifters.

Bumper Plates and Tri-Grip Plates

When you look further into the types of weight plates that you can buy, two of the most common ones that you will find are Bumper Weight Plates and Tri-Grip Weight Plates. Both of these are excellent choices and they are the two options that we sell at PowerGym. However, they do come with their own benefits. Bumper plates are becoming increasingly common, especially due to their use in competitions and training courses such as CrossFit. These types of plates are considered safer, preventing injuries to people or damage to the gym flooring should the plates be dropped. They are also quieter and make very minimal noise when lifted or dropped to the floor, and bumper plates support a wide range of exercises so you are spoilt for choice when it comes to tailoring your training routine. As the name suggests, tri-grip weight plates are designed with a triple grip design, ensuring that it is safe, quick and easy to handle and transport the weights. At PowerGym, our tri-grip plates feature a rubber coating to prevent rust and damage, ensuring that the plate will last for years. The plates have easy to see weight markings and with a high-quality finish, will look the part in your gym environment.
